COGS 589 Graduation Project - Syllabus

Description:

This non-credit course is a requirement for graduation from the Non-Thesis M.S. program in Cognitive Science. The course is required to be taken at the 3rd semester latest, excluding the deficiency ('hazırlık') semesters. Under the supervision of the course instructor, the student is expected to conduct a piece of research or do a project in the field of cognitive science and report the results.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student will have:

  • Formulated a research project
  • Learned how to use expertise and knowledge gained throughout his/her graduate work to conduct research and/or do a project.
  • Written and presented a research/project report

Course Learning Outcomes

Students who pass the course will be able to:

  • Define a research problem
  • Determine methods/tools and data to treat/solve this problem
  • Coordinate the research/project with the supervisor
  • Report, discuss and evaluate the results/findings
  • Present the research or project

Supervision, Report and Presentation Requirements

The supervisor/advisor of the project should be preferably from the COGS Department. A professor from within METU outside the COGS department may be accepted, but such requests should be approved by the administrative advisor of the student in the COGS Department.

The project report form COGS 589 is expected to be at least 15 pages long, including figures and diagrams.

The bibliography should adequately cover the previous research on the topic, in consideration of any prospective journal article submissions.

Evaluation

A pass (S) or fail (P) grade will be given on the basis of the project report and presentation.
