We are pleased to invite you to our Research Club event where Aliyar Özercan will give a talk titled "Sub-Theories of Mind" in room II-03 at the Informatics Institute, on Thursday (December 28th) at 15:00.

You can find the abstract for the talk below:

This paper delves into the Theory of Mind (ToM), a fundamental concept in understanding how individuals perceive and recognize that others have mental states distinct from their own. Traditionally, ToM is understood to emerge between ages 3 and 5, a phenomenon shrouded in ambiguity and rich in philosophical complexity. The aim of this paper is to demystify and redefine ToM by offering a detailed conceptualization, addressing the ambiguity surrounding it. Our approach is fourfold: firstly, we re-examine and refine ToM's foundational definition; secondly, we explore the primary functions and purposes of recognizing other minds; thirdly, we introduce the concept of 'sub-Theories of Mind' (sub-ToM) for a more nuanced understanding; and fourthly, we delve into the neurobiological and developmental aspects of these theories.
